Two of the most well-known African Americans of the Civil War era, Harriet Ross Tubman and Frederick Douglass, were both born into slavery on Maryland's Eastern Shore around the same time.
Perhaps as a result of its border-state decision to stay in the Union, Maryland's status as a slave-owning state is frequently forgotten today. Except for John Brown, of sacred memory, Frederick Douglass commended the famed heroine known as "Moses," adding, "I know of no one who has voluntarily faced more hazards and tribulations to help our enslaved people than [Harriet Tubman]."
Douglass fought for black people's citizenship, equal justice, and rights throughout this speech and his entire life. He modestly apologizes for being uneasy in front of the audience before starting his speech.

Douglas uses the fact that Tubman received little help or encouragement along the way and put herself at great risk to do so to justify this claim, as well as the incredible devotion to the abolitionist cause she has shown. In paragraph 2, he states, "The most that you have done has been witnessed by a few trembling, scarred, and foot-sore bondmen and women, whom you have led out of the house of bondage, and whose heartfelt, 'God bless you,' has been your only reward." Douglass stresses that many knew of her work and were forever grateful. Adler's text notes "great fears were entertained for her safety, but she seemed wholly devoid of personal fear." Douglass is aware of what Tubman faced as an agent of the Railroad and as a formerly enslaved person who sought freedom at least three times. As such, given his experiences, he can attest to Tubman's devotion and role, and hence why he deems himself not worthy to write the commendation she seeks.
