6. Multi-Step Problem A fish swims 12 miles
downstream in 2 hours. The fish swims back
upstream to the same point, but the trip takes
3 hours. Assume the speed of the current was
constant and the fish swam along the same
path.
a. Write a system of linear equations to
describe the situation.
b. Determine the speed of the fish in still
water.
c. Determine the speed of the current.
d. Writing If the speed of the current was
not constant, could you still calculate the
speed of the fish in still water?

Answers

Answer 1

The speed of the fish in still water is 5 Km/h.

The speed of the current is 1 km/hr.

Write the definition of speed.The speed at which an object's location changes in any direction. The distance traveled in relation to the time it took to travel that distance is how speed is defined.

For the given question.

Total distance travelled by fish = 12 miles.

Let the speed of the fish in still water be 'x km/h.'

Let the speed of the current be 'y km/hr'.

Time taken by fish in moving down steam is 2 hours.

Time taken by fish in moving up steam is 3 hours.

Use formula;

Distance = speed x time

Part a:  system of linear equations

Down steam; 2(x + y) = 12   ...eq 1

Up steam; 3(x - y) = 12   ...eq 2

Part b: speed of the fish in still water.

Solve equation 1 an d 2 by elimination.

2(x + y) = 12

3(x - y) = 12

Divide equation 1 by 2 and multiply it by 3, Then add to eq 2.

6x = 30

x = 5

Speed of fish in still water = 5 Km/h.

Part c: speed of the current

Put value of x in eq 1.

x = 5

2y = 12 - 10

2y = 2

y = 1

Thus, speed of the current is 1 km/hr.

Part d: If the speed of the current is not constant than, then the value of speed of the fish in still water can not be found.

The average annual rainfall for a town is 43.2 inches. The average monthly rainfall for the previous 9 months was 4 inches. Did the town exceed its average annual rainfall? If so, by how much?

Answers

Answer:

Yes, the town exceeded the average annual rainfall by 0.4 inches

Step-by-step explanation:

The average annual rainfall for a town is 43.2 inches.

This is converted to average monthly as:

43.2 in / 12 = 3.6 in

The difference is:

4 in - 3.6 in = 0.4 in

Answer:

Yeah, they exceeded by 0.4 inches.

Step-by-step explanation:

It is given that,

→ the average monthly rainfall for the previous 9 months was 4 inches.

The monthly rainfall in 12 months,

→ 43.2 inches ÷ 12 months

→ 43.2/12

→ 3.6 inches

Then the difference will be,

→ 4 inches - 3.6 inches

→ 4 - 3.6

→ 0.4 inches

Hence, the difference is 0.4 inches.

A scale of 1 : 200, 000 means that every 1 cm on the map is 200, 000 cm on the ground.

To find the distance on the map of 10 km, first convert it to cm:

How many solutions does 5 + x/3 = x/3 + 6 + x/9

A. Infinitely many solutions
B. Two solutions
C. No solutions
D. One solution

Answers

Answer:   D)  one solution

========================================================

Explanation:

A thing that jumps out at me right away is the presence of x/3 on both sides. When subtracting x/3 from both sides, these terms cancel out and we're left with this equation

5 = 6 + (x/9)

Let's say w = x/9. We now have this equation 5 = 6 + w. Subtract 6 from both sides to isolate w and you should get w = -1

Then plug in w = x/9 and solve for x.

w = -1

x/9 = -1

x = 9*(-1)

x = -9

We get exactly one solution and it is x = -9

--------------

Check:

5 + x/3 = x/3 + 6 + x/9

5 + (-9)/3 = (-9)/3 + 6 + (-9)/9

5 - 3 = -3 + 6 - 1

2 = 3 - 1

2 = 2

We get the same thing on both sides, which leads to a true statement. This causes a domino effect to lead the first equation to be true when x = -9. Therefore, the solution is confirmed.

The perimeter of an isosceles triangle is 380 cm and it’s unequal side is 150 find the area of triangle (by Heron’s formula)

Answers

Calculating the area (A) using Heron's formula

A = [tex]\sqrt{s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)}[/tex]

where s is the semi perimeter and a, b, c the 3 sides

here

s = 380 ÷ 2 = 190

given perimeter = 380 and unequal side is 150 , then

equal sides = (380 - 150) ÷ 2 = 230 ÷ 2 = 115 cm

then a = 150, b = 115 , c = 115

A = [tex]\sqrt{190(190-150)(190-115)(190-115)}[/tex]

   = [tex]\sqrt{190(40)(75)(75)}[/tex]

at the lone butte ranch 6 goats and 5 sheep sell for 305 while 2 goats and 9 sheep sell for 285. Find the cost of a single goat and a single sheep.

Answers

By solving a system of equations we can see that each goat costs $30 and each sheep costs $25.

How to find the cost of each animal?

Let's define the variables:

x = cost of a goat

y = cost of a sheep.

We can write the system of equations with the given info:

6*x + 5*y = 305

2*x + 9*y = 285

If we subtract 3 times the second equation from the first one, we get:

(6*x + 5*y) - 3*(2*x + 9*y) = 305 - 3*285

-22*y = -550

y = -550/-22 = 25

Now that we know the value of y we can try to find the value of x:

2*x +9*25 = 285

2*x = 285 - 9*25 = 60

x = 60/2 = 30

These are the costs of each animal.

There are many reasons why going to Mars is important. First, Mars is the most likely planet for us to colonize. No matter how expensive, we need to work on getting there as soon as possible. Furthermore, the technology that we would need to develop to send humans to Mars would directly benefit our economy here on Earth. Just look at the money-making products that have already resulted from NASAs space efforts: invisible braces, water filters, cordless vacuums, to name just a few. Although we have already sent robots to Mars, robots cant take the place of humans when it comes to studying the planet. A robot may break down. Also, it takes robots much longer to cover the same amount of ground than it would a human. Think how much faster we could learn about the planet if we sent humans to work alongside the robots! Finally, claims that there will be significant health problems for people who travel to Mars are wrong. Studies have shown that radiation levels on Mars are not lethal to humans. Sure, we would have to live in a dome at first, but over time, we could use science to change the atmosphere and make it possible to go outside, just like on Earth! The choice is clear. We need to go to Mars now!Article 2MarsA Waste of Time and MoneyBy Juniper SpringsWhile it might be fun to imagine traveling to Mars one day, now is not the time to go. For one thing, it is too dangerous. The atmosphere of the planet is more carbon dioxide than oxygen, and its very cold. While there are claims that the radiation levels on the planet are not lethal to humans, that does not mean they arent dangerous. We dont yet know what the long-term health effects will be. As of now, we do not have a solution for this problem. It is foolish to think a dome would be able to protect us from all of the radiation. It would also be impossible to build one large enough to house as many people as would want to go. Also, going to Mars will be expensive. Why spend money traveling to a planet that is so dangerous and far away? That money could be better spent addressing problems here on Earth. Furthermore, it is unwise to think any inventions that come about as a result of our race to Mars would make up for the cost of getting there. We are already able to send robots to Mars. It wont be long until our technology is so advanced that a robot will be able to do the same tasks as a human. It is not necessary to go to Mars right now.
