Fred, Norman, and Dave own a total of 128 comic books. If Dave owns 44 of them, what is the average
(arithmetic mean) number of comic books owned by Fred and Norman?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

[tex]Mean = 42[/tex]

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

Represent Fred with F; Norman with N and Dave with D.

[tex]Total = 128[/tex]

[tex]D = 44[/tex]

Required

Determine the arithmetic mean of F and N

First, we have that:

[tex]F + N + D = 128[/tex]

Substitute 44 for D

[tex]F + N + 44 = 128[/tex]

Subtract 44 from both sides

[tex]F + N + 44 - 44 = 128 - 44[/tex]

[tex]F + N = 84[/tex]

Arithmetic mean of F and N is calculated as follows:

[tex]Mean = \frac{F + N}{2}[/tex]

[tex]Mean = \frac{84}{2}[/tex]

[tex]Mean = 42[/tex]

A population of 50 deer are introduced into a wildlife sanctuary. It is estimated that the sanctuary can sustain up to 500 deer. Absent constraints, the population would grow by 40% per year.

Estimate the population after one year

p1 =

Estimate the population after two years

p2=

Answers

Answer:

p1 = 70 deer

p2 = 98 deer

Step-by-step explanation:

We use the population growth expression:

[tex]N(t)=N_0\,(1+r)^t[/tex]

which in our case renders:

[tex]N(t)=N_0\,(1+r)^t\\N(t)=50\,(1+0.4) ^t\\N(t)=50\,(1.4) ^t[/tex]

Therefore, after 1 year the population would be:

[tex]N(1)=50\,(1.4) ^1=70[/tex]

giving a total of 70 deer

and after two years, it would be:

[tex]N(2)=50\,(1.4) ^2=98[/tex]

janet can read 2.95 pages of a book in a minute if she reads for 4.7 minutes how much would she have read

Answers

Answer:

Janet reads 13.865 pages in 4.7 minutes.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that Janet can read 2.95 pages of a book in a minute.

unit rate = 2.95 pages/per minute

As she reads for 4.7 minutes.

We just need to multiply 4.7 minutes with 2.95 to determine total pages she would read in 4.7 minutes.

i.e.

4.7 × 2.95 = 13.865 pages

Therefore, Janet reads 13.865 pages in 4.7 minutes.

Matthew took a cab home from his office. The cab charged a flat fee of $4, plus $2 per mile. Matthew paid $34 for the trip Write an equation to show the number of miles Matthew drove

Answers

Answer:

(34-4)/2

Step-by-step explanation:

First you would subtract the flat fee of 4 dollars from the total ($34) which would give you 30 then you divide 30 by the rate or dollars per mile (2) which would leave you with 15 so he drove 15 miles and if you were to writ this as an equation (as shown above) it would look like this (34-4)/2 where you first subtract (hence the parentheses) then you would divide (hence the / ). Why is math so hard to do for other people in the world?

Answers

Answer:

To make math easy for my students, whenever I become a math teacher, is the sole purpose why I want to be an educator. To understand how to make math easy, one needs to understand the whats, hows, whys of why people struggle with math.

Most people do not relate to math well and it usually starts around the middle/highschool level.

It's really no one's fault, to be honest.

At some point after arithmetic people start to lose sight, rather never realize what math is actually about. Math is more than counting, it is about critical thinking, logic, reason, pattern, and theory, way more than just digits. Yet, common education( at least here in the US) teaches to follow steps to solve problems as if it were a cookbook, just memorize the recipe and your good to go. If one gets the right or wrong answer, they would be lost as to explain what is truly happening.

Example Learning algebra I followed steps to solve for “x. ” Yet, I never knew, truly, what I was doing. All I remember thinking was the y intercept helped me get the “x.” Only later in self study in college did I bump into the fundamental theorem of algebra…. It all made sense. That moment put it into perspective for me.

If we want people to be good at math we have to give perspective on what is being taught, either presenting theory(which Uncle Sam should do), or simply by giving the bigger picture. With my example, to many people, they see it as a whole bunch digits and letters, get confused, and rightly so. If we explain to someone what's going down, that we are studying lines and that the intercepts(roots) help us better study(analyze) and capture these here lines and curves.

“Mr. Teacherman, Why do we need to study lines and cruves?” Great question student! To help us better understand the world around us. Just studying these simple curves on a graph may seem meaningless, but it forms the basis for things that aid us in many human endeavors, from building edifices to computer programming.

I wish that teachers did that in every class everyday.

In the US, we follow the cookbook method disservicing an entire country, especially those who are on the lower end of society.
