My parents came here from Colombia during a time of great instability there. Escaping a dire economic situation at home, they moved to New Jersey, where they had friends and family, seeking a better life, and then moved to Boston after I was born. Throughout my childhood I watched my parents try to become legal but to no avail. They lost their money to people they believed to be attorneys, but who ultimately never helped. That meant my childhood was haunted by the fear that they would be deported. If I didn’t see anyone when I walked in the door after school, I panicked. And then one day, my fears were realized. I came home from school to an empty house. Lights were on and dinner had been started, but my family wasn’t there. Neighbors broke the news that my parents had been taken away by immigration officers, and just like that, my stable family life was over. Not a single person at any level of government took any note of me. No one checked to see if I had a place to live or food to eat, and at 14, I found myself basically on my own. While awaiting deportation proceedings, my parents remained in detention near Boston, so I could visit them. They would have liked to fight deportation, but without a lawyer, and with an immigration system that rarely gives judges the discretion to allow families to stay together, they never had a chance. Finally, they agreed for me to continue my education at Boston Arts Academy, a performing arts high school, and the parents of friends graciously took me in. I was lucky to have good friends, but I had a rocky existence. I was always insecure about being a nuisance and losing my invitation to stay. I worked a variety of jobs in retail and at coffee shops all through high school. And, though I was surrounded by people who cared about me, part of me ached with every accomplishment, because my parents weren’t there to share my joy. My family and I worked hard to keep our relationships strong, but too-short phone calls and the annual summer visits I made to Colombia didn’t suffice. They missed many important events in my life, including my singing recitals—they watched my senior recital on a tape I sent them instead of from the audience. And they missed my prom, my college application process and my graduations from high school and college. My story is all too common. Every day, children who are U.S. citizens are separated from their families as a result of immigration policies that need fixing. I consider myself lucky because things turned out better for me than for most, including some of my own family members. When my brother was deported, his daughter was just a toddler. She still had her mother, but in a single-parent household, she faced a lot of challenges. My niece made the wrong friends and bad choices. Today, she is serving time in jail, living the reality that I act out on screen.* I don’t believe her life would have turned out this way if her father and my parents had been here to guide and support her. I realize the issues are complicated. But it’s not just in the interest of immigrants to fix the system: It’s in the interest of all Americans. Children who grow up separated from their families often end up in foster care, or worse, in the juvenile justice system despite having parents who love them and would like to be able to care for them. I don’t believe it reflects our values as a country to separate children and parents in this way. Nor does it reflect our values to hold people in detention without access to good legal representation or a fair shot in a court of law. President Obama has promised to act on providing deportation relief for families across the country, and I would urge him to do so quickly. Keeping families together is a core American value. Congress needs to provide a permanent, fair legislative solution, but in the meantime families are being destroyed every day, and the president should do everything in his power to provide the broadest relief possible now. Not one more family should be separated by deportation. From "My Parents Were Deported" by Diane Guerrero (Copyright © Diane Guerrero, 2014).

Who is Barack Obama?

Barack Obama was the first African American President of the United States of America.

In this excerpt that was written by “My Parents Were Deported” by Diane Guerrero, she talks about how the people were being deported and after that, there was no one present to give any help with the legal information also how it was difficult for him to regulate and live a life when the parents were being detained.

By this statement, Obama wanted to say that while waiting for Congress to come up with a durable, equitable compromise solution, families are being decimated every day. There shouldn't be any more family-splitting deportations. Therefore, option D is the correct option.

New Technology Leads to Bigger Cities

In the 1800s, the United States was still a very young nation, trying to solidify its identity. The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain, a fast development of society following the introduction of machines. The United States was slower than Great Britain to fully embrace the changes. Yet key technological developments caused a rapid growth in American urban areas.

Better farming methods and tools in the 1800s increased food production. Americans were able to grow enough food for their families as well as to sell. The abundance caused food prices to fall.

The expansion of cotton and the growth of textile factories in northern states helped produce the first wave of American industry. More people turned to work in northern factories as a way to support their families. Thousands of immigrants to the United States also settled in or near port cities, looking for work. Even today, the need for work is a common reason people move to urban areas.

As a result, cities grew in numbers of people and physical space. As more people and businesses moved in, they needed buildings for living and working. They needed ways to move around the city. We call this process urbanization.

In 1820, the United States had only a few cities of 10,000 residents or more. About seven percent of U.S. residents lived in urban areas. The number of cities with more than 10,000 people grew quickly over the next 40 years, especially in the Northeast and Midwest. By 1860, about 20 percent lived in cities. Philadelphia and New York City were the most populated cities in 1860 and would soon reach one million residents.

The urbanization of the United States quickened due to technology improvements. Without innovations in food production, the factories could not have grown so quickly. The trend quickened after 1860 and continued throughout the 21st century as well. By 2007, more Americans lived in or near cities than they did in rural areas.

Hello. This question is incomplete. The full question is:

Paraphrase the passage below from The Odyssey: A Prodigious Man Slept in this cave alone and took his flocks to graze afield remote from all companions  knowing none but savage ways a brute so huge he seemed no man at all of those who eat good wheaten bread but he seemed rather a shaggy mountian reared in solitude.

Answer:

It was common for a large, crude and un-civilized man to sleep alone in a cave after taking his livestock to eat the vegetation they needed, away from people. The man did not know how to live in a civilized way, he did not know how to eat properly and he did not even behave like a human being, he did not even look like one, he looked more like a wild, furry and little sociable animal.

Explanation:

A paraphrase happens when you take a passage written by an author and rewrite it by modifying the words, but maintaining the same meaning as the passage, as shown above, where a paraphrase was made of the description of Cyclops Polyphemus, from the original text of " Odyssey".

It is important to note that the paraphrase is not a summary but an adaptation of the original text. In addition, the paraphrase should always be referenced, placing the author's name and page number where it is possible to find the original text.

Answer:

Rodriguez-Padilla celebrates the purity, honesty, and directness of his own childhood writing: "You wrote from the heart back then, about the things you cared about. You didn't care to be the next Kate Chopin or Oscar Wilde" (Eschholz 54). Yet, this piece begins with a quotation from Montaigne and includes several literary references. Is that considered a pardox? Is writing "from the heart" compatible with writing in a sophisticated or intellectually demanding way? Why, or why not?

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

1. This can be considered a paradox. This is because the quote states that the writer did not care about being Kate Chopin or Oscar Wilde, in this case, we can understand that he did not care about the great names of literature, but the author contradicts himself, when he uses quotes from well-known writers, showing that he, in fact, gives importance to the great names of literature. This is a paradox, that is, it is a contradiction that maintains a little bit of truth.

2. Writing "from the heart" is not compatible with writing in a sophisticated and formal way. This is because writing in a sophisticated way means writing in a rational, coherent and grammatically correct way, writing "from the heart" means writing with emotion, regardless of rules, linguistic devices or academic concepts, but in the way that emotion commands.

Soldiers of my Old Guard: I bid you farewell. For twenty years I have constantly accompanied you on the road to honor and glory. In these latter times, as in the days of our prosperity, you have invariably been models of courage and fidelity. With men such as you our cause could not be lost; but the war would have been interminable; it would have been civil war, and that would have entailed deeper misfortunes on France. I have sacrificed all of my interests to those of the country. I go, but you, my friends, will continue to serve France. Her happiness was my only thought. It will still be the object of my wishes. Do not regret my fate; if I have consented to survive, it is to serve your glory. I intend to write the history of the great achievements we have performed together. Adieu, my friends. Answer:

The type of irony found in this excerpt is: situational irony.

Explanation:

Situational irony is a literary device consisting of leading the reader to believe a certain event / ending will take place and then unexpectedly changing the outcome.

The author describes Chef Kylie's dishes in detail. Readers get to know that his most acclaimed dishes all consist of meat - lots and lots of meat. With such a description, it is ironic for the author to, all of a sudden, reveal that the chef is actually a vegetarian. Most readers probably do not see it coming at all. Who would expect a vegetarian to used so much meat in their own cooking? Why would a vegetarian cook something they do not eat themselves? Readers are thus shocked by this revelation, and that is where the situational irony lies.

Where does the tone shift in the poem.

The poem has a tone of melancholy and sadness, but the lines "The teeming autumn, big with rich increases, bearing the wanton burden of the prime, like widow'd wombs after their lord's decease" cause a change of tone. This is because these lines talk about abundance, hope that provides a certain comfort to the reader, but quickly the tone returns to being melancholy, removing this comfort previously achieved.

What is a knit sweater?

Knitting is a method by which yarn is manipulated to create a textile, or fabric. It is used to create many types of garments. Knitting may be done by hand or by machine.

Knitting creates stitches: loops of yarn in a row, either flat or in the round (tubular). There are usually many active stitches on the knitting needle at one time.

Knitted fabric consists of a number of consecutive rows of connected loops that intermesh with the next and previous rows. As each row is formed, each newly created loop is pulled through one or more loops from the prior row and placed on the gaining needle so that the loops from the prior row can be pulled off the other needle without unraveling.

Therefore, The knit sweater had a variegated pattern of colors and textures is mixed.
