Memories of a Memory

Have you ever witnessed something amazing, shocking or surprising and found when describing the event that your story seems to change the more you tell it? Have you ever experienced a time when you couldn't really describe something you saw in a way that others could understand? If so, you may understand why some experts think eyewitness testimony is unreliable as evidence in scientific inquiries and trials. New insights into human memory suggest human memories are really a mixture of many non-factual things.

First, memory is vague. Imagine your room at home or a classroom you see every day. Most likely, you could describe the room very generally. You could name the color of the walls, the floors, the decorations. But the image you describe will never be as specific or detailed as if you were looking at the actual room. Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen rather than specific details. So when a witness tries to identify someone, her brain may recall that the person was tall, but not be able to say how tall when faced with several tall people. There are lots of different kinds of "tall."

Second, memory uses general knowledge to fill in gaps. Our brains reconstruct events and scenes when we remember something. To do this, our brains use other memories and other stories when there are gaps. For example, one day at a library you go to quite frequently, you witness an argument between a library patron and one of the librarians. Later, when telling a friend about the event, your brain may remember a familiar librarian behind the desk rather than the actual participant simply because it is recreating a familiar scene. In effect, your brain is combining memories to help you tell the story.

Third, your memory changes over time. It also changes the more you retell the story. Documented cases have shown eyewitnesses adding detail to testimony that could not have been known at the time of the event. Research has also shown that the more a witness's account is told, the less accurate it is. You may have noticed this yourself. The next time you are retelling a story, notice what you add, or what your brain wants to add, to the account. You may also notice that you drop certain details from previous tellings of the story.

With individual memories all jumbled up with each other, it is hard to believe we ever know anything to be true. Did you really break your mother's favorite vase when you were three? Was that really your father throwing rocks into the river with you when you were seven? The human brain may be quite remarkable indeed. When it comes to memory, however, we may want to start carrying video cameras if we want to record the true picture.

Which line from the text best explains what our brains do when there are blanks in a story?

Human memories are really a mixture of many non-factual things

Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen

Our brains use other memories and other stories when there are gaps

Documented cases have shown eyewitnesses adding detail to testimony

discuss two ways in which some cultural views that exist may affect a relationship negatively .

Answers

Answer:

House chores

Jealousy:flattering or insulting

Explanation:

House chores can be divided based on gender in some cultures. For instance, ‘guy chores’ may involve taking out the trash, fixing minor plumbing issues or anything requiring heavy lifting, while ‘girl chores’ are cooking or organizing the house with the occasional cleaning.

In our case, we may come from different cultures with their own definitions of gender roles but we both prefer the chores equally distributed. Since she can eat my type of food and I prefer to organize my stuff, I cook and organize the house which she cleans.

It would have been an issue if both of us acted based on culturally-defined gender roles, which can be mistaken for being sexist or liberal, rather than being a little open-minded about personal preferences or perspectives.

Jealousy: flattering or insulting?

In general, being jealous and possessive are traits both guys and girls share. However, how your jealousy is interpreted can depend on how it is viewed culturally.

As the war dragged on, Germany began to show signs of the terrible effort required to fight so many enemies. The British blockade resulted in shortages of everything; soap, meat, clothing, liquor, tobacco, fuel, paper - the list was endless. People who owned some land started up little gardens in their front or backyards and tried to grow a few vegetables. Others grew tomatoes in window boxes or asked for small plots of land in public parks. The casualty list grew and grew. Armless or legless men became common sights. Everyone had a loved one or relative who had been killed in the war. The army began to call up younger and younger men. Eventually fourteen-year-old schoolboys were accepted as recruits - replacements for the millions of dead and wounded.

To what does the term "going public" refer? a. action taken by a president to communicate directly with the people in order to influence public opinion and put pressure on Congress b. a public statement written by the president and attached to a particular bill to outline the president's interpretation of the legislation c. a public statement issued by the president declaring that if Congress passes a particular bill that the president dislikes, it will ultimately be vetoed d. an agreement between the United States and one or more foreign countries that is not a formal treaty, so it does not need Senate approval

Answers

Answer:

The term "going public" refers to:

a. action taken by a president to communicate directly with the people in order to influence public opinion and put pressure on Congress.

Explanation:

When a president goes public, that means he addresses the people directly in order to "sell" his programs. That is, instead of presenting his policy agendas to the Congress, the president presents it to the people first. By doing so, the president is able to get the people on his side, which pressures the Congress. However, such a tactic offers risk. If a president fails after "going public", he may appear ineffective.
