Selznick, son of silent-movie producer Lewis Selznick, was already on his way through the ranks of new-to-talkies Hollywood when, in 1930, he forged the greatest union of Hollywood families in history by marrying Louis B. Mayer’s daughter Irene. Selznick had left MGM for Paramount and then RKO when he returned to work with his father-in-law at MGM in 1933, given a job as vice president and head of his own production unit at the studio. By then, Mayer was one of the most powerful studio heads in Hollywood, overseeing “more stars than there are in heaven.” In 1927, Mayer amassed 36 founders from various parts of the film industry to create the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—the organization responsible for the Academy Awards. The guidance of his father-in-law at MGM paid off for Selznick when he left in 1935 to head up his own independent studio, Selznick International Pictures, which produced the likes of A Star Is Born (1937), Rebecca (1940), and (adjusted for inflation) the highest-grossing film of all time, Gone with the Wind (1939). Chris said that we should save it for last, when the crowd would thin out. Try as I might, there was no convincing him otherwise. He was my big brother after all.

I almost forgot about the Dark Tunnel because we soon entered the big pool with a machine that created artificial waves. Then there was the Cliffhanger, which Mom didn't allow me to go on, but it was priceless to see Chris's face when he got off the ride. Time was running out on the day, and I was thinking about the Dark Tunnel again. With the park almost closing, we went back to the ride just in time. Chris was right for once—there was hardly a line when we got there.

One of the reasons that we have so few records from the Viking Age is that the Vikings did not become familiar with the Roman alphabet (the alphabet we use today) until they adopted Christianity. However, they did have another form of lettering, known as runes. Runes were normally carved, rather than written, and were therefore mostly used for fairly short inscriptions. It is unknown how many people could read runes in the Viking Age. Runic inscriptions on pieces of wood from Bergen in Norway show that runes were used for all sorts of everyday purposes later in the Middle Ages, but no comparable evidence has survived from the Viking Age, and it is likely that few people were literate in runes. However, the fact that some Vikings were able to carve their names on their possessions suggests that the use of runes wasn't uncommon.
