Gold was first discovered in California by James Marshall at Sutter's Mill near the city of Coloma. Marshall was building a sawmill for John Sutter when he found shiny flakes of gold in the river. He told John Sutter about the discovery and they tried to keep it secret. However, soon word got out and over 300,000 people rushed to California to find gold and "strike it rich".

On July 1, the Confederate Army had a small fight at Union at the crossroads town of Gettysburg. The next day the fighting got worse as the Confederates attacked from the left and right. On July 3, the leader of the Confederate Army, General Lee, ordered an official attack and managed to break through enemy lines. But, by July 4th, Lee had lost so many soldiers he had to turn back.
