A short time afterward, Amelia became the sixteenth female to earn a pilot’s license. In 1928, an opportunity arose for Amelia to participate in a transatlantic flight across the Atlantic Ocean as a copilot. This experience later came in handy when she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1938. She received many honors for this achievement, such as the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress.
