Scientists have been working on how to build robot brains that develop in the same way as human brains. In the past, scientists have tried to copy human brains exactly. The trouble is, there is still so much that scientists do not know about how human brains work. But a group of scientists at Michigan State University have developed a new plan. They are using nature as an example to follow for robots. We know that things change and adapt in nature. These scientists want to make robots that can change and adapt, too. The robots would learn to do tasks over time. The goal is to have robots with brains that develop like human brains do, over many years.One task this team of scientists worked on was to get robots to enter and exit a room. This action is easy for humans to complete, but not for robots. The scientists used a math equation to program the robots on this task. They created a program where the robots had to work on the task in connection with other robots. The robots watched each other and took on special roles for the task. This made them more successful. Then, the robot brains that worked the best on a task were the models used for future brains. This is very much like what happens in nature. A characteristic that works well for an animal gets passed on to its babies.Overall, this group of scientists thinks that following what happens in nature is the key to creating robots that can think like humans. Problem Solving with Peanuts and Sweet Potatoes
For years, farmers in Alabama grew cotton and nothing else. As a result, farmers had damaged fields that could no longer cultivate crops. The fields broke down from planting the same thing year after year. Then, in 1914, a pest called a boll weevil destroyed crops. The solution to this problem came from George Washington Carver, an African-American scientist and inventor. He discovered that the soil in Alabama grew peanuts and sweet potatoes well. Carver suggested that farmers grow peanuts and sweet potatoes to help the soil.


This plan worked. Farms began producing peanuts and sweet potatoes. However, not many people bought these foods. Farmers struggled to earn a living. Carver responded to this situation with more research. He wanted farmers to keep planting these crops. He experimented and made products from peanuts and sweet potatoes. Carver made 300 other things from peanuts, such as flour, milk, ink, and dye. He made about 100 products from sweet potatoes, including glue and ink. By 1940, peanuts became the second leading crop to make money in the South. Carver changed how cotton was grown and made many other crops important to the South.

TERI SCHULTZ: Providing refuge to Jews, she noted later, carried a punishment of at least six months in a concentration camp. Still, the Austrian-born Dutch woman, knighted by the governments of Germany and the Netherlands, recipient of a medal from Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, always insisted she had done nothing extraordinary.

AMOS: I, myself, I'm just a very common person. I simply had no choice. I could foresee many, many sleepless nights and a life filled with regret if I would have refused to help the Franks. And this was not the kind of life I was looking for at all.

SCHULTZ: Gies explained another motivation for emphasizing her modesty. She said if people are allowed to think it takes remarkable qualities to act boldly on behalf of others, few will attempt it.

AMOS: People should never think that you have to be a very special person to help those who need you.

SCHULTZ: But Gies clearly was very special, even when someone still unknown betrayed those she called the hiders and they were taken away at gunpoint to death camps. Gies was not intimidated. She sneaked back into the secret hideaway to try to preserve any belongings of the Franks that hadn't been destroyed or taken. And there she found what would eventually become a treasure of the entire world.

AMOS: I saw Anne's diary scattered all over the floor. I took it with me. I hoped I could return it to Anne after the war. I wanted to see her smile and hear her say, Oh Miep, my diary.

SCHULTZ: That day would never come, as Anne did not survive the Nazi death camps. But Otto Frank did. And he made his way back to Amsterdam in 1945 returning to stay with Gies and her husband. On the very sad day that year that he learned both his daughters had died in a camp, Otto Frank later explained in a documentary, Gies delivered him what he called a miracle.

AMOS: When I returned and after I heard the news that my children would not come back, Miep gave me the diary.

SCHULTZ: Gies described that moment herself years ago in an interview with the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam.

​ In November 1904, American workers began completion of the Panama Canal. American officials wanted to avoid the problems that caused France to abandon the project. They wanted to protect workers from disease. An engineer, John F. Stevens, was sent to the work camp in Panama. He began building hospitals as well as water and sewage systems making the working conditions sanitary. He supported the camp doctor’s efforts to fight mosquitoes, the cause of malaria and yellow fever. All of these efforts helped to keep the workers healthy and focused on the task at hand.

​ Since the water level of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans is not the same, a system of locks and gates had to be built in the canal. These locks are a pathway for ships to move from one ocean to the other. A lock is a giant box made of concrete. A ship must pass through three locks in the Panama Canal. Each lock holds millions of gallons of water. A ship moves into a lock, which is filled with water. Water is pumped into the lock or out of the lock. This raises or lowers the ship to the level of water in the next lock. The gates open, and the ship moves into the next lock.
​ By early 1913, the canal was nearly complete. It took several months to fill the canal with water. On September 26, 1913, an old tugboat was the first ship through the canal. Thousands of people watched and cheered. The locks worked perfectly.
​ In modern times, approximately 14,000 ships make the 50-mile trip through the canal each year. On average, the trip through the canal takes a ship 8 to 10 hours. The ship captain does not steer the ship through the canal. A specially trained canal pilot takes control of the vessel and expertly guides it through the canal.
​ Time, money, and possibly even lives have been saved as ships use the shorter route from ocean to ocean provided by the canal. The Panama Canal, a highway of water, is a phenomenon.
