Treasury bonds paying an 8% coupon rate with semiannual payments currently sell at par value. What coupon rate would they have to pay in order to sell at par if they paid their coupons annually?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

8.16%

Explanation:

Note that when a bond pays a semiannual coupon, coupon payments are made twice a year, hence, in order to determine its annual coupon rate if the coupon is paid once a year, we need to determine its effective annual rate using the formula below:

effective annual rate=(1+coupon rate/n)^n-1

current coupon rate=8%

n=number of times in  a year that coupon payments are made=2

effective annual rate=(1+8%/2)^2-1

effective annual rate=(1.04)^2-1

effective annual rate=8.16%

Williamson, Inc. has a debt-equity ration of 2.5. The firm’s weighted average cost of capital is 10% and its pre-tax cost of debt is 6%. Williamson faces a corporate tax rate of 35%. 1. What is Williamson’s cost of equity capital? 2. What is Williamson’s unlevered cost of equity capital? 3. What would Williamson’s WACC be if the firm’s debt-equity ratio were 0.75? What is it were 1.5?

Answers

Cost of Equity Capital = 25.25%, Cost of Unlevered Equity = 13.33%, WACC = 11.33%, 10.26%.

Given Information

The Debt Equity Ratio is 2.5

The Weight of debt is 2.5/3.5

The Weight of Equity is 1/3.5.

1.  Calculation of Williamson’s cost of equity capital

WACC = (Weight of Equity*Cost of Equity) + (Weight of Debt*Cost of Debt*(1-Tax Rate))

10% = (1/3.5 * Cost of Equity Capital)+ (2.5/3.5 *6% * (1-35%))

(10% - (2.5/3.5*6%*(1-35%))= (1/3.5 * Cost of Equity Capital)

(10% - (2.5/3.5*6%*(1-35%)) *3.5 = Cost of Equity Capital

(0.10 - 0.02785714285)*2.5 = Cost of Equity Capital

0.25250000002 = Cost of Equity Capital

Cost of Equity Capital = 25.25%

2. Calculation of Williamson’s Cost of Levered Equity Capital

Cost of Levered Equity Capital = (Cost of Unlevered Equity Capital + Debt(1-Tax Rate) /Equity) * (Cost of Unlevered Equity Capital-Cost of Debt)

25.25% = Cost of Unlevered Equity Capital + 2.5*(1-35%)*(Cost of Unlevered Equity Capital - 6%)

Cost of Unlevered equity * (1+2.5*0.65) = (25.25%+2.5*0.65*6%)

Cost of Unlevered Equity = (25.25%+2.5*0.65*6%) / (1+2.5*0.65)

Cost of Unlevered Equity = 0.35 / 2.625

Cost of Unlevered Equity = 0.13333333333

Cost of Unlevered Equity = 13.3333%

3. Calculation of Williamson’s WACC

a. At debt Equity ratio of 0.75:

Cost of Levered Equity Capital = Cost of Unlevered Equity Capital+Debt*(1-Tax Rate)/Equity*(Cost of Unlevered Equity Capital-Cost of Debt)

Cost of Levered Equity Capital = 13.3333% + (13.3333%-6%)*0.75*(1-35%)

Cost of Levered Equity Capital =16.9083%

WACC = Weight of Equity*Cost of Equity+Weight of Debt*Cost of Debt*(1-Tax Rate)

WACC = 1/(0.75+1)*16.9083%+0.75/(1+0.75)*6%*(1-35%)

WACC = 11.33%

b. At debt Equity ratio of 1.50:

Cost of Levered Equity Capital =Cost of Unlevered Equity Capital+Debt*(1-Tax Rate)/Equity*(Cost of Unlevered Equity Capital - Cost of Debt)

Cost of Levered Equity = 13.3333% + (13.3333%-6%)*1.50*(1-35%)

Cost of Levered Equity = 18.5333%

WACC = Weight of Equity*Cost of Equity+Weight of Debt*Cost of Debt*(1-Tax Rate)

WACC = 1/(1+1.30)*18.5333%+1.30/(1+1.30)*6%*(1-35%)

WACC = 10.26%

A college education fund is to be accumulated by twenty level semi-annual deposits, the first due on Jan. 1, 2011. The fund is to provide sixteen quarterly withdrawals of $1000 each, the first due on Oct 1, 2020. The nominal annual rate of interest is 10% convertible semi-annually. What is the amount of each deposit?

Answers

Answer:

$395.74

Explanation:

the college fund requires 20 equal semiannual payments starting January 1, 2011 and the last one should be made on July 1, 2020.

first we must determine the effective rate of the fund:

effective rate = (1 + 10%/2)² - 1 = 10.25%

now we must determine the quarterly rate:

quarterly rate = (1 + r)¹/⁴ - 1 = 2.47%

the present value of the annuity:

PV = distribution x annuity factor

distribution = $1,000PV annuity factor, 2.47%, 16 periods = 13.08553

PV = $1,000 x 13.08553 = $13,085.53

that means that by July 1, 2020, you need to have $13,085.53 in your college fund

FV of an annuity = contribution x annuity factor

FV = $13,085.53FV annuity factor, 5%, 20 periods = 33.066

MRS > PX/PY.

Answers

Answer:

c. the consumer is willing to give up more of good Y to get an additional unit of good X than is necessary under the current market prices.

Explanation:

The slope of an indifference curve measures the marginal rate of substitution, or basically how much of good Y you are willing to give up in order to consume more of good X. While the slope of the budget line is basically the relationship between the price of good Y over the price of good X.

When the slope of the indifference curve is steeper, you are willing to consume more of good X and less of good Y.

Answers

Answer: c. quantity of coal produced will be greater than the socially optimal quantity

Explanation:

The Socially Optimal quantity is the level of production that takes into account the negative externality being produced by coal and weighs it against the marginal benefit it brings.

If coal produces the negative externality of polluting the environment here then the socially optimal quantity of coal will be less than the market equilibrium because the marker equilibrium would not have taken into account the negative externality and will lead to more coal being produced than should be.

An important similarity between a monopolistically competitive firm and a purely competitive firm is that:_________-a. realize an economic profit in the long run.b. achieve allocative efficiency.c. face demand curves that are less than perfectly elastic.d. achieve productive efficiency.

Answers

Answer:

a. realize an economic profit in the long run.

Explanation:

A monopoly is a market structure which is typically characterized by a single-seller who sells a unique product in the market by dominance. Thus, it is a market structure wherein the seller has no competitor because he is solely responsible for the sale of unique products without close substitutes. Any individual that deals with the sales of unique products in a monopolistic market is generally referred to as a monopolist.

Hence, one of the ways in which some monopolistic competitors try to become more like monopolists is through the use of designer labels.

This ultimately implies that, when there are barriers to entry it may result in monopolistic competition among the sellers of goods having no close substitutes. These barriers consist of economies of scale, network externalities, copyright law, trademark, patent, governmental policies etc.

In a purely competitive market, there are many buyers and sellers (price takers) of homogeneous products (standardized products with substitute) and the market is free (practically open) to all individuals or business entities that are willing to trade all their goods and services.

Hence, a purely competitive market is characterized by the following features;

1. Perfect information.

2. No barriers, it is typically free.

3. Equilibrium price and quantity.

4. Many buyers and sellers.

5. Homogeneous products.

An important similarity between a monopolistically competitive firm and a purely competitive firm is that realize an economic profit in the long run and these profits tends toward zero as both firms continue in the market.

Answer:

ending finished inventory= $17,000

Explanation:

Giving the following information:

purchases, $114,000

beginning inventory, $27,000

cost of goods sold $124,000.

To calculate the ending inventory, we need to use the following formula:

COGS= beginning finished inventory + cost of goods manufactured - ending finished inventory

124,000 = 27,000 + 114,000 - ending finished inventory

ending finished inventory= 141,000 - 124,000

If Farmer Jane's opportunity cost of producing corn is lower than Farmer John's, she has a(n) ___________ in producing corn.

a. increasing advantage
b. comparative advantage
c. absolute advnatage

Answers

Answer:

b. comparative advantage

Explanation:

Opportunity cost also known as the alternative forgone, can be defined as the value, profit or benefits given up by an individual or organization in order to choose or acquire something deemed significant at the time.

Simply stated, it is the cost of not enjoying the benefits, profits or value associated with the alternative forgone or best alternative choice available.

For example, if you decide to invest resources such as money in a food business (restaurant), your opportunity cost would be the profits you could have earned if you had invest the same amount of resources in a salon business or any other business as the case may be.

In this scenario, Farmer Jane's opportunity cost of producing corn is lower than Farmer John's, therefore, she has a comparative advantage in producing corn.

Comparative advantage in economics is the ability of an individual or country to produce a specific good or service at a lower opportunity cost better than another individual or country.

Hence, the comparative advantage gives an individual or country a stronger sales margin than their competitors as they are able to sell their specific products or render their peculiar services at a lower opportunity cost.

Whatever it is, tomorrow I will find out, and hopefully hell let me bring some to class so that I can show my friends since Ive been bragging about it to them ever since Dad told me I could go! Saturday, April 3 The treasure hunt was fun, but it was not what I expected. Dad and I left early in the morning and headed for the same woods that we sometimes go hiking in on Sundays. I never would have thought they hold treasure, but what was really odd was when Dad told me to leave the shovels at home because we wouldnt need them. But what he did bring with him was a bright yellow GPS . I had seen it in his truck many times before. I always wondered what he did with it. Today I found out. Dad and I wandered into the woods, first staying on the hiking path I had taken several times before and then veering off the path. The forest was like a statue; it was still and covered in damp moss and dead leaves; it didn't even seem alive. It appeared that no one had been there for a long time so I knew that this treasure must be old and far under the ground. How were we going to get to it without shovels? As Dad kept his eyes on the GPS , I looked around, and suddenly I noticed a patch of leaves that was disturbed and a log that looked like it had been moved. When I asked Dad about it, his eyes lit up, and he said he saw the treasure. He reached under the log and pulled out a plastic box with a label that read Official Geocache. I didnt know what an official geocache was, but I soon found out when Dad opened it. Inside was a little notebook and a bunch of small items like a set of dice, a toy car, and a large silver dollar. Dad said that he thought the toy car was cool, so he took it out and put it in his pocket and then pulled a golf ball from his other pocket and put it in the box. He wrote his name and my name in the little notebook and then closed the box and put it back where he found it. Geocaching, which is what Dad later told me this type of treasure hunting is called, was much different than digging for gold in the ground. But I thought it was fun, and I hope Dad takes me again next Saturday. Part A In "Nicholas's Diary: April 2 and 3," what does Nicolas think of the treasure his father hunts for? The Pony ExpressChapter IAt A Nation's CrisisThe fall of Fort Sumter in April, 1861, did not produce the Civil War crisis. For many months, the gigantic struggle then imminent had been painfully discernible to far-seeing men. In 1858, Lincoln had forewarned the country in his "House Divided" speech. As early as the beginning of the year 1860 the Union had been plainly in jeopardy. Early in February of that momentous year, Jefferson Davis, on behalf of the South, had introduced his famous resolutions in the Senate of the United States. This document was the ultimatum of the dissatisfied slave-holding commonwealths. It demanded that Congress should protect slavery throughout the domain of the United States. The territories, it declared, were the common property of the states of the Union and hence open to the citizens of all states with all their personal possessions. The Northern states, furthermore, were no longer to interfere with the working of the Fugitive Slave Act. They must repeal their Personal Liberty laws and respect the Dred Scott Decision of the Federal Supreme Court. Neither in their own legislatures nor in Congress should they trespass upon the right of the South to regulate slavery as it best saw fit.These resolutions, demanding in effect that slavery be thus safeguardedalmost to the extent of introducing it into the free statesreally foreshadowed the Democratic platform of 1860 which led to the great split in that party, the victory of the Republicans under Lincoln, the subsequent secession of the more radical southern states, and finally the Civil War, for it was inevitable that the North, when once aroused, would bitterly resent such pro-slavery demands.Read this sentence from the text:...for it was inevitable that the North, when once aroused, would bitterly resent such pro-slavery demandsBased on the description provided, what was the North's attitude toward slavery?
